Abstract

894,222. Variable-speed gear; differential gear. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Oct. 27, 1960 [Nov. 27, 1959], No. 36897/60. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXI] In a vehicle transmission the output shafts 49, 59 of a bevel differential gear 41 are arranged parallel to the engine crank-shaft 1, the differential gear being connected to the planet carrier 33 of a two-speed and reverse epicyclic gear driven through two paths provided by pinions 3, 17, or a three-element torque converter 7 and pinions 15, 19. The epicyclic unit consists of two sun wheels 23, 25, intermeshing planets 31, 35, and an annulus 37, sun wheel 25 being connected to drive pinion 17 through clutches 27, 29, while sun wheel 23 is directly coupled to drive pinion 19. For starting and low-speed drive a band brake 63 is engaged to hold sun wheel 25, the drive being transmitted through the torque converter 7, while for intermediate speed brake 63 is released and clutch 29 engaged, the planet gear thus being locked for direct drive, again from the torque converter. For high speed split-torque drive clutch 29 is released and clutch 27 engaged, so that planet carrier 33 is overdriven with respect to sun wheels 23, 25. For reverse, a band brake 61 is applied to hold annulus 37. Coast braking may be obtained by engaging clutch 29 or brake 61, and normal braking by engaging a disc brake 65 to slow planet carrier 33.
