Abstract

881,058. Revolving - cylinder engines. BISHOP. A. E. March 25, 1959, No. 10366/59. Class 122 (3). [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXIX] A revolving cylinder engine comprises a rotary cylinder block 22, Fig. 6, surrounded by an annular ring 43 of a ball race, the axes 45 and 46 respectively of the block and race being parallel but spaced apart. The cylinder block 22 is provided with a plurality of cylinders 24 . . . 28 such that their axes are offset a distance " O " from a parallel block radius. A cage 41 carries rollers 42, one for cach piston, which are movable in slots 79 such that each roller is in rolling contact with its piston and the ring 43 of the race. The cage 41 is formed of annular plates provided with the slots 79 which are connected by members 75 accommodated in longitudinal grooves 47 of the cylinder block. In a modification, the grooves 47 are formed in the plates of the cylinders, the roller supports forming the necessary gear-like engagement between the block and the cage. The valve plate 38, Fig. 5, is provided with a lowpressure and high-pressure port 89, 90 respectively and is urged into contact with the cylinder block by a spring 85. A piston-like member 91, formed on the plate, provides an annular area on which acts the high-pressure in the port 37 to balance the fluid-loading acting to separate the valve plate and block. In a further modification, one flange of the roller cage is formed integral with the cylinder block and the slots carrying the rollers are of elliptical shape.
