Abstract
889,278. Resilient sheet materials. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Oct. 20, 1958 [Dec. 21, 1957], No. 39771/57. Class 140. Resilient sheet material is produced by applying adhesive coated resilient particles over one surface of a sheet of hessian or other flexible sheet material in a layer of substantially uniform thickness, applying on the accessible surface of this layer a foamed gellable vulcanizable compounded aqueous rubber dispersion and/or another liquid resilient cellular material precursor, and consolidating the assembly so formed, the precursor being forced during consolidation into the layer of adhesive coated particles, and being caused and/or allowed subsequently to the consolidation to undergo conversion into foam rubber or other resilient cellular material. The hessian or other sheet material 1 and the layer of the adhesive coated particles 2, which may have a thickness of # to ¢ inch, may be coated with the precursor 5 by means of a nozzle oscillated from side to side in front of the nip between rollers 3, 4, which consolidate the assembly and which may force the precursor into the layer of adhesive coated particles to a distance of 20 to 90% of its thickness. The particles may be of ground natural or synthetic foam rubber, polyester-isocyanate and/or polyether-isocyanate foams. The adhesive may be based upon a foamed or unfoamed vulcanizable compounded rubber latex, foamed or unfoamed polyvinyl acetate dispersions, and polyurethane foam-forming mixtures based on a polyester or a polyether and an isocyanate. The precursor, other than rubber dispersions, may be foamed vinyl chloride plastisols and polyurethane foamforming mixtures. The rubber dispersions may be based on natural rubber, on a butadienestyrene copolymer or other synthetic rubber, or a mixture thereof. The consolidating step may be followed by heating to vulcanize the adhesive. The precursor may be heated to effect conversion into the cellular material, conversion and vulcanization being effected in a single heating operation.
