Abstract
888,841. Optical sighting instruments. BARR & STROUD Ltd. June 16, 1958 [July 27, 1957], No. 23861/57. Class 97(1). An optical sighting instrument of the periscope type capable of viewing the space on both sides of an obstruction comprises two viewing apertures laterally spaced in a viewing plane, coaxial telescopes in the viewing plane, an eyepiece between the telescopes and a reflector combination having a line of separation which passes through the common telescope axis perpendicular to the viewing plane so that, at a predetermined range, two part images of an object meet in complementary disposition at said line of separation to form a complete image of the object. As shown in Fig. 1, light beams from an object enter viewing windows 2 and are deflected by adjustable prisms 3 through telescopes 5, 6, 7 to internally reflecting prisms 4 having their apices along a line which is perpendicular to the viewing plane and passes through the common axis 12 of the telescopes. Part-images formed by the telescopes at the prism surfaces thus appear side by side when viewed through an eyepiece 8 and merge to form a single image of the object when the end prisms have been adjusted to the range of the object by screws 10 bearing range scales 13. In a modification the range-finder is set to the correct range by moving optical wedges along the telescope axes. By inverting the end reflectors and the prisms 4 the observer may view an object located behind him.
