Abstract
A retro-a -hydroxy acid or ester of the Vitamin A series is transformed into the corresponding b -dehydro aldehyde or the retro-b -dehydroaldehyde of the Vitamin A series deficient in one carbon atom by the action of an acid reagent in a solvent at elevated temperature. The reaction may take place by refluxing the hydroxy acid in an alcoho or aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence ol an aqueous dilute mineral acid or a strong organic acid. Examples describe the conversion of 5-(21,61,61-trimethyl-cyclohexene-21 ylidene)-3 - methyl - 2 - hydroxy - pentene - 3 - acid - 1 to b -dehydro-C14 aldehyde and of its methyl ester to retro-b -dehydro-C14 aldehyde. Phenyl semicarbazones of the aldehydes are prepared. The dehydro C19 aldehydes may be similarly prepared. The substituted pentene acid may be prepared by condensing b -ionone with chloroacetonitrile in the presence of a sodium alkoxide and hydrolysing the resulting 5 - substituted - 3 - methyl - 2, 3 - oxido-pentene-4-acid-imido alkyl ester.
