Abstract

A method of glaze-coating a web or sheet 6, e.g. of paper, after the sheet has had a molten coating material, e.g. wax, applied thereto, comprises passing the coated sheet between and in contact with endless bands 9, 10 having a smooth, glossy surface, without relative movement between the sheet and the bands which carry the sheet first through a heated zone and then through a cooled zone. The bands 9, 10 pass round sets of rollers 71 . . . 76, 81 . . . 86 respectively, the first three rollers of each set being <PICT:0887737/III/1> heated and the last three cooled. Alternatively or in addition, infra red heaters and cooling air may be employed. The rollers are carried in frames 11, 12, one or both of which may be hydraulically urged or spring-urged towards the other. The coating material, which may be a microcrystalline wax with or without paraffin wax and polyethylene, is delivered by pipes 3 to the bight 5 between driven heated rollers 1, 2. The surfaces of the rollers 1, 2 may be covered by an absorbent material. One side only of the sheet 6 may be coated, and liquid-level control means may be provided. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown) the heated and cooled zones each have a separate pair of endless bands. Examples of suitable band materials are given, and the bands may be prepared to produce graining or embossing of the coating. In the first described embodiment, a graduated temperature range may be provided through the apparatus, e.g. by providing each roller 71 . . . 76, 81 . . . 86 with temperature control means.
