Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0887700/IV (b)/1> where R1 represents a hydrogen or metal atom or a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl (up to 4 carbon atoms in the alkyl residue), unsaturated alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl or amino group and R2 represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl group; the preparation thereof by (a) reacting a thiosalicylic acid of the general formula <FORM:0887700/IV (b)/2> with a haloformic ester of the formula R3OCOX (where X represents a halogen atom and R3 represents an alkyl, aralkyl or aryl group) and reacting the product with R1NH2, or (b) reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:0887700/IV (b)/3> with thionyl chloride or with R4COX (where R4 represents R3 or OR3) and reacting the product in either case with R1NH2, or (c) reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:0887700/IV (b)/4> with phosgene or with R3OCOX, or (d) in the case where R1 represents a metal atom, by treating the compound I, where R1 represents a hydrogen atom, with a suitable metalising agent (e.g. metal hydroxide), or (e) in the case where R1 represents an alkyl, cycloalkyl, unsaturated alkyl, substituted alkyl or aralkyl group, by reacting the above metal derivative with an appropriate organic halide; and pharmaceutical compositions containing the products (see Group VI). The examples include the preparation of 3,31-ethylene - bis - (benzo - 1 : 3 - thiazinedione-2,4) by reacting the sodium salt of benzo-1 : 3-thiazinedione-2,4 with ethylene dibromide, and by reacting thiosaliyclic acid with ethyl chloroformate and ethylene diamine in the presence of triethylamine.ALSO:Pharmaceutical preparations, useful as antipyretic, bacteriostatic and fungistatic agents, comprise one or more compounds of the general formula <FORM:0887700/VI/1> (wherein R1 represents a hydrogen or metal (e.g. sodium) atom, or an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl (up to 4 carbon atoms in the alkyl residue), unsaturated alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl or amino group and R2 represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl group) together with a pharmaceutical carrier. They may take the form of tablets, capsules, solutions (including injectable solutions), suspensions, syrups and elixirs.
