887,446. Stuffing-box substitutes. CROSS MANUFACTURING CO. (1938) Ltd. Nov. 10, 1960 [Jan. 7, 1960], No. 611/60. Class 122 (5). A packing ring device for an outer member 1 rotatable relative to an inner member 2 comprises a resilient packing ring 4, e.g. of rubber or synthetic plastic with or without embedded fabric or fibre, which is housed in an annular groove 3 in the member 1 and is in sealing contact with the member 2 when the member 1 is at rest or rotates up to a predetermined speed, clearance space being provided between the ring 4 and the bottom of the groove 3, allowing the ring to stretch circumferentially under centrifugal action when the member 2 exceeds the predetermined speed whereby sealing and rubbing engagement of the ring 4 with the member 2 is eased. As shown, the members 1, 2 constitute a casing and a shaft, the latter being stationary or rotating in the same or opposite direction as and relative to the casing. The ring 4 has a cruciform section and is pressed on to the shaft by a spirally coiled tension spring 5, a split metal sleeve 6 being interposed between the ring and the spring. A separate labyrinth or other seal may be used in conjunction with the sealing device to apply sealing pressure between the members upon rotation of the outer member above the predetermined speed.
