Abstract
887,324. Typewriters &c. SMITH & SON (ALACRA) Ltd., W. H. Oct. 23, 1959 [Oct. 23, 1958], No. 33921/58. Class 100(4) A web-feeding mechanism for use in, or as an attachment for, a tabulating or like typewriting machine, comprises a web-feed drive, an escapement mechanism operable to restrain rotation of the web-feeding mechanism to single line-space movements in response to signals from the tabulator or line machine, such restraint being releaseable to effect a long feed, and a program member for stopping the web after a predetermined continuous long feed. A top web 22 is fed by pin wheels 32, 33 on shaft 30 and a condensed record web 21 is fed by pin wheels 35, 36 on a shaft 34. The shafts are geared together and either one or the other is driven by a constantly running motor. As shown the shaft 34 is driven by gear 46 from gear 45 on a shaft 44 secured to the driven side of a jamming ball or roller type clutch, the driving side of the clutch being operated from the motor by gear 41. The drive to the shaft 34 to stop feeding, is controlled by three ratchet wheels and associated solenoids SOL1, SOL2, and SOL3, and pawls 60, 61, and 68 respectively. The teeth of the ratchets engaged by pawls 60, 61 are staggered so that when the solenoids are alternately energized a line-by-line escapement feed is permitted. To effect a long feed a long feed signal is received direct from the tabulating machine, or a notch 78 in the program tape 73, Fig. 8, causes operation of a switch lever 79. This operates both escapement solenoids SOLl and SOL2 so that the clutch engages continuously until the driven side of the clutch is stopped by the engagement of the pawl 68 with the third ratchet 59 through a predetermined opening 76 in the program tape 73. Pawl 68 is released next time either SOLI or SOL2 is energized. In a modification a notch equivalent to notch 76 operates a second switch lever to stop feeding of web.
