Abstract

886,871. Glass tempering apparatus. PITTSBURG PLATE GLASS CO. March 24, 1960, No. 10520/60. Class 56. The apparatus comprises a blowing frame with spaced parallel pipes each apertured to direct air on to a glass sheet in a pattern defined generally between a pair of equidistant sinusoidal lines, the frame being reciprocated at least in the direction of the axes of the pipes. In one form each pipe 310 carries a number of pairs of divergent nozzles 340c, 340d, all producing a blast having a horizontal mean direction, and other divergent 2 pairs 340a, 340b and 340e, 340f producing mean directions of blast alternatively upwards and downwards. The blast pattern produced on the glass sheet by each pipe, as shown in Fig. 9, is bounded between sinusoidal lines 358, 359. Any gap 367 between this pattern and that formed by an adjacent pipe may be covered by reciprocation of the pipes in the longitudinal direction F. An oscillation, for example, eliptical, combining also a transverse component, as described in Specification 866,885, may also be used. Another embodiment Fig. 13, comprises triangular sets of nozzles 381a, 381b, 381c producing divergent jets impinging on the glass in areas centred at 383a, 383b, 383c, Fig. 16, alternating with nozzles 381d, 381e, 381f for jets impinging at 383d, 383e, 383f. Specifications 800,368 and 834,763 also are referred to.
