[Also in Groups XXIII and XXIV] A method of preparing a friction surface on a non-ferrous synchronizing ring, which may if desired later be sprayed with molybdenum or carborundum and which in use coacts with a synchronizing element of steel in a change-speed gear, comprises compacting and roughening the surface of the ring by blasting with a hard agent having a coarse grain. In the form shown, a friction synchronising cone 12 for use in change-speed gearing is made of a non-ferrous alloy, such as bronze, the surface being either blasted with fine carborundum of grain size 0À5-0À8 mm., or first blasted with a coarse grain agent such as cast-iron balls or pieces of steel and then further blasted with a fine-grain agent. As shown in Fig. 1, the friction surface is provided with a helical thread 13 and cross grooves 15 to remove any oil film when the synchronising clutch is engaged. After blasting with a finegrain carborundum, a compacted surface layer 16, Fig. 2, formed by the impacts of the grains, covers the surface area of the friction cone. Some of the grains of carborundum are embedded within the friction surface, and remain during operation of the friction clutch. As shown in Fig. 3, the helical threads 13, &c. are omitted, and a layer 17 of molybdenum is sprayed on to the compacted surface 16 formed by a previous blasting operation. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 816,169.
