Abstract

Wetting agents of formula <FORM:0886768/IV (b)/1> where R and R1 are C8-10 alkyl, and X is alkali metal or ammonium are prepared by heating a bis(C8-10 alkyl) ester of vinylphosphonic acid to 70 DEG C.-120 DEG C. with an alkali metal bisulphite or ammonium bisulphite in the presence of catalytic quantities of an oxygenyielding compound selected from alkali metal persulphates, ammonium persulphate, alkali metal perborates and alkali metal percarbonates. Preferably 0.5%-5% by weight of catalyst based on the ester is used. In examples R and R1 are n-octyl, n-decyl and 2-ethylhexyl and X is Na. Specifications 841,886 and 858,057 are referred to.
