[Also in Group XVII] In a brick stacking apparatus (see Group XVII) successive rows of bricks are picked up and then deposited on to a stack that descends in a step-by-step motion. The pick-up device 5, Fig. 1, comprises pairs of Z-shaped gripping arms 10, pivoted at 11, intermediate their ends. The arms 10 have self-adjusting shoes 12 and are pivoted at their upper ends to a pair of supporting arms 14 adapted to rock around a pivot 15. The toggle arrangement constituted by each pair of arms 14 is supported at 16A by channels 16, which channels are coupled to piston-rods 17 (not shown in Fig. 1) allowing vertical reciprocation of the arms 14. The piston chambers 18, for the rods 17, are supported on a secondary frame that is itself vertically reciprocated within a main frame 24 by a further piston-andcylinder arrangement 23. As each row of bricks is delivered by a table 2 to a position below the pick-up device 5, the piston-andcylinder arrangement 23 operates to cause the device 5 to descend, then the piston chambers 18 are actuated to close the arms 10 on to the bricks. Thereafter the piston-and-cylinder arrangement 23 reverses to raise the bricks above the table 2 and, after the table has been retracted, the piston chambers 18 are actuated to open the gripping device to drop the bricks on to a stack 28 therebelow.
