Abstract

886,351. Electrical measuring systems. CONSOLIDATED ELECTRODYNAMICS CORPORATION. Dec. 10, 1958 [Feb. 3, 1958], No. 39775/58. Class 40 (1). A moisture-sensitive cell comprises a pair of electrodes on a support coated with a hygroscopic electrolytic film of thickness from 30 to 200 microinches. As shown, the electrodes in the form of two interwound platinum wire helices are embedded in a tube 11 of silica or glass. A hygroscopic film 14 is deposited over the electrodes and the surface of the tube by filling the tube with a mixture of acetone and an aqueous solution of orthophosphoric acid. A gas stream is passed through the tube to evaporate the acetone and the water is electrolytically removed by passing a current between the electrodes 10, 12, leaving a dry film of phosphorus pentoxide. The Specification gives a table showing the relationship between film thickness in the range 8 to 200 micro inches against the ratio of acid to acetone. The table also gives initial drying times and measurement response times. Alternative electrolytes are sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, potassium metaphosphate and silicic acid. The acetone may be replaced by other water-miscible liquids such as methanol, dioxane, esters, halides or other ketones. The moisture content of a gas may be determined by measuring the integrated current required to electrolyse the water absorbed in the film 14. The Specification also refers to measuring moisture content in dichlorodifluoromethane without specific calibration. Reference is also made to known humidity sensitive devices in which the glass tube 11 is replaced by PTFE.
