886,103. Preparing fibres for spinning; gill boxes. COMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION. Jan. 21, 1958 [Jan 21, 1957], No. 40493/57. Drawings to Specification. Classes 120(1) and 120(3) Short fibres, such as wool fibres having an average length of from 4 to 12 centimetres, are prepared for spinning by a first drafting stage wherein the fibres are gripped in a first position, fed forward to a second position not more than 6 centimetres in advance of the first position and then combed forwardly from the second position at a speed not less than three times the feeding speed. It is stated that by employing such a process carding machines need not be used. Scoured wool from a hopper is placed on a conveyer feeding to a "converter" gill box in which the front and back ratches (i.e. distances from roller nips to the nearest faller pins) may be 5 cm., the back draft 6, and the front draft 2. The sliver produced passes to second and third "converters" similar to the first but with a back draft of 3 and a front draft of 4. A burr crushing mechanism may be included at any suitable stage. After a back-washing operation the material passes through two normal gill boxes and thence to a Noble comb.
