Abstract

A pressure-sensitive adhesive comprising a vinyl-addition elastomeric polymer, or tape or sheets coated therewith, is irradiated with electromagnetic radiation with a wave-length between 2,000 and 3,000 . to increase the molecular weight of the polymer. Specified polymers are natural rubber, a styrene butadiene or acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer, an isobutylene polymer of copolymer, a low molecular weight polyvinyl ester, and a low molecular weight polyacrylic or polymethacrylic ester. The adhesive may be irradiated whilst on a backing which is not to be removed before the use of the adhesive. Access of oxygen to the p adhesive is restricted during the irradiation, e.g. by displacing air around the adhesive with an inert gas, or by laminating a film, which is transparent or partially transparent to the radiation, on to the adhesive. An activator may be present during the irradiation, e.g. dispersed or dissolved in the adhesive solution or emulsion, applied to a filler, e.g. polyethylene, dispersed in the adhesive or applied to a surface in contact the adhesive or applied to a surface in contact with the adhesive. Specified activators are benzaldehyde, p-chlorobenzaldehyde, benzophenone and 4-chlorobenzophenone. In examples, adhesive compositions comprise (1) pale crepe rubber, ester gum, benzophenone and toluene, (2) styrene-butadiene copolymer, hydrogenated ester gum or hydrogenated rosin, petroleum jelly, 2-chlorobenzophenone and toluene, (3) a vinyl acetate-2 ethyl hexyl acrylate copolymer solution containing parachlorobenzaldehyde, (4) a butyl rubber, mineral oil and n-hexane, (5) polyvinyl ethyl ethers (a mixture of low and high molecular weights), benzaldehyde and petroleum ether and (6) polybutyl acrylate, hydrogenated ester gum or hydrogenated rosin, parachlorobenzaldehyde and toluene.
