Abstract

885,502. Valves. ROBERTSHAW-FULTON CONTROLS CO. April 24, 1958 [July 22, 1957], No. 13047/58. Class 135. [Also in Group XIII] A control device comprises the combination of a thermo-electric magnetically re-set safety valve with a control valve 54, Fig. 4, actuated through a snap-acting device 64 either directly or through a crank 102 by a thermal-electric motor having a thermally expansible member 84 heated by an insulated resistance wire 86 in series with a thermostat. Gas for space or furnace heating passes the thermo-electric safety valve in casing 70 to an adjusting cock 24 containing a rotatable adjusting sleeve valve 40 and then past valve 54. The member 84 may be a sleeve, a solid rod or a bored rod adjustably connected to the casing at 106. The member 84 may be provided with ballast means to prevent overheating and straining the snapacting mechanism e.g. as shown in Fig. 10 by having an inner sleeve 488 engaging the adjusting screw 408 and which expands during long periods of heating of the element 84 to reduce its overall expansion. In other embodiments an aluminium wire extends through the bored rod to increase the rate of heat transfer to the surrounding structure or a dispersoid of heatconducting material, e.g. silver lacquer paste, may be introduced between the ends of the member 84 and the surrounding structure. The electrical ballast means may be formed by using a heating element whose resistance increases with temperature.
