Abstract

Alumina is produced by calcining aluminium hydroxide, preferably produced by the Boyer process, in the presence of a boron compound and hydrofluoric acid. The process may be carried out as described in the parent Specification using 1% to 5% by weight of boric acid, and, instead of up to 5% by weight, e.g. 1%, of aluminium fluoride, an amount of hydrofluoric acid such that the amount of fluoride ion is the same as in the aluminium fluoride.
