Abstract
884,477. Colouring anodized aluminium. REYNOLDS METALS CO. Dec. 15, 1958 [Dec. 13, 1957], No. 40392/58. Class 93 [Also in Group XXXVI] Anodized aluminium articles are provided with a black inorganic finish by immersion in a solution of a reducible ferric ammonium double salt, treating with a substantially non-alkaline sulphide ion donor, and sealing the resulting iron sulphide coating. The double salt may be ferric ammonium tartrate or oxalate; the sulphide ion donor may be hydrogen sulphide or ammonium hydrosulphide; the preferred sealing method is treating with an aqueous solution of a soluble dichromate such as sodium or potassium dichromate. The anodizing may be effected in a sulphuric acid bath of from 5 to 70% concentration using A.C. or D.C.: preferably for 20 minutes using D.C. at 15 volts and 12 amps/ sq. foot at 70‹F.
