[Also in Group XXII] The holder 3 of a twist drill or rotary cutter is connected to its socket 5 by a helical spring 15, one end of which is attached to an enlargement 12 of the socket while the other end is formed as a series of clutch coils 17 encircling the holder 3 and tightened thereon by rotation of the socket 5, and the members also have a screw thread connection 7 whereby in the event of seizure of the drill &c. the rotation of the socket results in axial withdrawal of the drill &c. from the workpiece. Such withdrawal may result in the drill driving and/or feeding means being cut off; for example in the arrangement shown in Fig. 3 the drill is fed by a fluid-operated piston acting through rack and pinion gearing 20, 21, 22 and axial movement of the drill holder causes a push rod 28 to unseat a valve 26 and thus exhaust the pressure cylinder 23. In the case of an electric feed movement of the holder opens a microswitch through a pin and slot connection between the holder and socket and an operating lever, Figs. 4-6 (not shown).
