In shelling and sorting cashew nuts, roasted nuts, from a hopper 8, are fed by a bucket elevator 10 and a shoot 11, Fig. 1, into the upper end of an inclined cylindrical screen 2, the apertures of which gradually increase in size from its upper end, and the screened nuts fall into hoppers 5. As they pass from each hopper, the nuts are crushed between a pair of crushers 12 and 14, Fig. 3. Kernels and shell fragments fall on to a conveyer belt 6, which carries them into the upper end of an inclined, prismshaped screen 7, from which fine shell fragments, kernels and coarse shell frgaments are delivered, respectively, through outlet shoots 34, 35 and 36, Fig. 2. The crushers 12 are in the form of toothed sectors and are carried on a rotationally reciprocating shaft 13. The crushers 14 are in the form of toothed jaws, each swinging about a pivot 15. The clearance between each jaw and sector can be adjusted by a screw 16.
