Abstract

873,560. Paper &c. made from pulp of high freeness. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. Sept. 28, 1959 [Oct. 6, 1958], No. 32847/59. Class 96. Paper, e.g. for newsprint or towelling, or cardboard &c. is made from a paper pulp suspension on to the fibres of which has been precipitated a hydrous alumina complex as by the addition of alum, or aluminium chloride, bromide, nitrate or benzoate, followed by alkali, e.g. sodium hydroxide and then, (e.g. at the head box), by e.g. 0.0001 to 0.01% of a water-soluble, anionic, linear carbon chain polymer of molecular weight in excess of 5,000,000 substantially composed of carbamyl alkylene and carboxy alkylene linkages of not more than 4 carbon atoms each, 2 to 20% of which linkages are carboxy alkylene. Rosin size may be added at the beater, after the alum. The aliuninapolymer complex is stated to form practically instantaneously an agglomeration of the fines in the pulp, thereby increasing the freeness of the pulp and thus allowing high-speed paper formation. The pulp may include some fibrillated synthetic fibres, pigments, dyes, and fillers. The invention is applicable to asbestos pulp for making fire barriers, or pipe wrappings &c.
