Abstract

873,473. Containers for dropping from aircraft. BLACKBURN AIRCRAFT Ltd. June 16, 1958 [May 2, 1957], No. 14042/57. Class 4. [Also in Group XXXIV] A container for dropping solid or liquid stores from aircraft comprises an outer, preferably corrugated, shell 1 formed with a rigid nose portion 2 above which is located two spaced partitions 3, 5, the partition 5 being free to slide within the shell. A block of shock absorbing material 4 e.g. resin-bonded honeycomb material, is positioned between the partitions and an inner container 18 for the stores, preferably sub-divided into segments as shown in Fig. 3, is positioned above portion 5 and an annular pad 19 prevents the lower edge of the container from being trapped between partition 5 and container 1. A fixed portion 9 holds container 18 in place and a parachute 10 is housed in the upper open end of the shell and retained by cross-laced cords 16, the rigging lines 11 of the parachute being attached to ears 12 on the shell. A static line (not shown), is provided for attachment to the aircraft whereby the parachute is automatically withdrawn when the container is dropped. Upon impact of nose 2 with the ground the container 18 will move down within the shell 1, bringing about failure of block 4 so that the shock of impact is not transmitted to the contents of container 18. Such movement is facilitated by the provision of layers of waxed paper 20 between container 18 and shell 1.
