Abstract

A bonding agent for natural or synthetic rubber comprises a solution of chlorinated rubber and a dinitroso-aromatic compound; preferably there is employed a solution of 70-120 cps. viscosity at 25 DEG C., in which the proportion of chlorinated rubber to the total weight of chlorinated rubber and dinitroso-aromatic compound is 85%-98%. Dinitroso-aromatic compounds specified are p-dinitrosobenzene, p-dinitrosotoluene, 1, 4-dinitrosonaphthalene, 1, 2-dinitrosonaphthalene, m-dinitrosobenzene, dinitroso derivatives of dihydric phenols such as dinitrosoresorcinol, dinitroso-orcinol, dinitrosophloroglucinol monomethyl ether. Specified solvents are xylene, coal tar naphthas, benzene and toluene. One typical agent comprises 4 parts chlorinated rubber of 125 cps. viscosity and 1 part chlorinated rubber of 14,5-31 cps. viscosity (the viscosities having been determined in 20% w/w toluene solution at 25 DEG C.), 0,6 part p-nitrosobenzene, 0,25 part dibasic lead phosphite, 0,5 part carbon black and 20 parts xylene. Examples are concerned with the peel strengths of rubber-metal assemblies made by bonding metal to natural, Butyl and Neoprene rubbers, respectively, with chlorinated rubber/dinitroso aromatic compositions, and curing at 307 DEG F.
