Abstract

A zirconium tube is cleaned by degreasing with acetone brushing with a stainless steel brush, pickling by immersing in a water bath at 80 DEG F. and at the same time passing an aqueous solution of 5% hydrofluoric acid and 45% nitric acid through the tube and rinsing in water and acetone. A zirconium-uranium alloy rod containing 22% uranium is grit blasted, washed and polished and cleaned in an aqueous solution of 5% hydrofluoric acid and 50% nitric acid for 1-3 minutes prior to rinsing with water and acetone. The cleaned parts are bonded to form a nuclear fuel element (see Groups XXII and XL(a)).
