Abstract

872,327. Non-metallic springs. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Dec. 4, 1957 [Dec. 19, 1956], No. 37795/57. Class 108(3). A torsion spring 1, Fig. 1, of plastics material, i.e. a synthetic resin or a polymer or modified polymer of natural origin, has fixing lugs 2, 3. Figs. 4, 5 show a spring having three spires, 12, 13, 14, lugs 9, 10 stiffened by ribs 20 and a central rod 15 retained by head 16 which stiffens the spring. The diameter of rod 15 can be chosen to limit the reduction in diameter of the spring brought about under tension and thus limit the amount of rotation of one lug which is possible relative to the fixed lug. A further spring, Fig. 6, not shown, has two fixed lugs and a central movable lug. Moving the central in one direction puts one spring under tension whilst the other spring is free to rotate since the springs are connected to the fixed lugs by keys. Stops prevent movement in one direction only so that the appropriate spring is tensioned whichever way the central lug is moved. This arrangement ensures that the springs are always tightened up, not unwound when placed under tension. In a further embodiment a flat spiral spring having three spires extends between a body 35 and a core 39 which is turned by a square ended spindle 46 to tension the spring. The height of the spires decreases towards the core to provide a variable rate and a dust cap 45 is provided. In a modification of the previous embodiment one spire of varying thickness is provided.
