Abstract
872,116. Pressure-sensitive adhesive transfer tape. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. April 8, 1959, No. 11863/59. Class 140. A tacky pressure-sensitive adhesive acrylate polymer film having a steel plate adhesion value both at the exposed and at the initially concealed surface of at least 50 ounces per inch width (which is the stress required to strip the adhesive film from a polished steel plate) is removably supported on a thin flexible carrier web which has on both surfaces a coating of a cured polymethylsiloxane inert towards the said adhesive film. The acrylate polymer may be a copolymer of acrylate ester and a small but significant amount of acrylic ester e.g. at least about 90 parts of iso-octyl acrylate and not more than 10 parts of acrylic acid. The silicone polymer may be cured by a curing agent which is a metal salt of an organic acid e.g. lead octoate. The flexible carrier web may be a vegetable parchment made by acid treatment of heavy kraft paper containing glycerine as a flexibilizing agent. The silicone coated parchment carrier web may be first coated with a copolymer of fusel oil acrylate and methyl isoamyl acrylate, and then further coated with a resin-treated acrylate adhesive comprising a copolymer of 2- ethylbutyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate and an oil-soluble heat and oil-reactive phenol-aldehyde resin, or the silicone-coated web may be first coated with a vinyl-n-butyl ether polymer and then coated with a copolymer of fusel oil actylate and methyl isoamyl acrylate. The adhesive layer may be transferred to paper, glass, wood, metal, plastic and other surfaces. Specification 642,306 is referred to.
