Abstract

Substantially unvulcanized wet latex foam waste is converted into a dry, finely divided vulcanized powder, e.g. 40- to 200-mesh (U.S. Standard), by subjecting it, together with a grinding agent if necessary, e.g. carbon black, whiting, to an intense shearing action for 2-10 minutes whilst held under compression in a confined space, sufficient heat being generated to remove unexpressed water as steam, the temperature of the material being maintained below a point, e.g. 330 DEG F., at which agglomeration of the subdivided particles occurs. The process may be applied to partly or wholly coagulated foams or aqueous dispersions of natural or synthetic rubber and is conveniently effected in a Banbury mixer provided with jacketed walls and hollow rotor blades for the circulation of cooling fluid.
