Abstract

871,526. Rope release device for a bollard. BEAN Ltd., E. J., and ASH, W. J. Aug. 27, 1959 [Nov. 7, 1958], No. 35851/58. Class 78 (5). A ship's mooring bollard is provided with a sheave 5 capable of movement in two directions relative its pedestal 1, being mounted by means of trunnions 6 upon ring 4 rotatable around the said pedestal. The sheave is, when out of use, locked in horizontal position, by means of a catch formed of levers 8, 10 mounted as shown upon the inside of the sheave, and when in use, is free to pivot in the vertical plane, to align itself with the pull of the rope, because the loop of the mooring rope around the sheave engages lever 8 to release the said catch. Additionally, the rope engages twin levers 18 carried pivotally at 19 by the sheave, so that the rope is normally held securely around the sheath, levers 18 having struts 21 in end-to-end relationship to affix said levers. Quick release in case of fire.- In use, the sheave 5 is inclined to the horizontal, the loop of the rope being held by levers 18. To release, the operator pulls chain 31 to the left. This causes pawl 26 to pivot about 29, thus releasing weight 24, which drops upon head 35 and causes chain 37 to descend and so tips lever 41 anticlockwise about pivot 42. Lever 41 engages and knocks up struts 21 so that levers 18 are free to move anticlockwise to release the loop of the rope. The weight is now reset at 28 by the operator, who pulls chain handle 38 to the right. At the same time, the catch 8, 10 operates to secure the sheave in the horizontal position. The quickrelease may be effected by piston-and-cylinder 48 in place of chains 31 and 37.
