Abstract
Ferrocene derivatives of formula: <FORM:0870949/IV (b)/1> wherein R1 stands for hydrogen or an alkyl radical, and R11 and R111, which may be the same or different, stand for alkyl radicals are made by reacting a cyclopentadiene derivative of formula: <FORM:0870949/IV (b)/2> wherein R1, R11 and R111 have the meanings above with an anhydrous iron halide in the presence of a strong organic base, or b) interaction of a metal derivative of the said cyclopentadiene compound and an anhydrous iron halide. The mutual derivative may be an alkali metal derivative or a magnesium halide derivative. The process is preferably carried out in an inert solvent e.g. tetrahydrofuran or toluene, and at a temperature between 0 DEG and 30 DEG C. Suitable organic basis specified are piperidine and diethylamine. The preparation of 1:11-dineopentylferrocene is described.
