Abstract
870,823. Feeding record cards. COMPAGNIE DES MACHINES BULL. Nov. 3, 1958 [Nov. 29, 1957], No. 35236/58. Class 106 (1). [Also in Group XXIV] Relates to a construction of a friction disc clutch controlled externally by an electromagnet (see Group XXIV). As applied to the feed mechanism of an accounts machine, an electric motor 128 drives through a gear-train 126, 122 to a first clutch E1 according to the invention, and through a gear train 180 ... 183 to a second clutch E2 rotating in the opposite direction, engagement of either clutch causing a shaft 110 to turn and, through a coupling AC, drive a roller R engaging an accounts sheet B and acting in the manner of a type-writer platen. When the clutches E1, E2 are disengaged, an electromagnetically - controlled brake F is applied to hold the shaft 110 &c. stationary. Control of the clutches and the brake is effected by a three-position switch C fed with current from a source S. On feeding an accounts sheet B into the machine, a conducting mark or line thereon acts through mechanism not described to move the switch C from a position A, where it causes engagement of the brake F to a position M1, thus disengaging the brake F and engaging the clutch E1. Accordingly the shaft 110 and the roller R rotate rapidly to drive the accounts sheet B. When the accounts sheet reaches the end of its travel, another conductive mark thereon causes the switch C to move to the position M2, disengaging the clutch E and instead engaging the clutch E2 to drive the roller R slowly in the opposite direction and feed the accounts sheet B back. When the accounts sheet again reaches the end of its travel, a conductive mark thereon causes the switch C to be moved from the position M2 to the position A, disengaging the clutch E2 and engaging the brake F to station the shaft 110. The accounts sheet B is ejected from the machine on momentary operation of the switch C by hand to the position M2, thus engaging the clutch E2 to drive the roller R.
