Abstract

870,810. Toy blocks; educational appliances. SHIPTON & CO. Ltd., E. April 28, 1959 [April 28, 1958], No. 13388/58. Classes 132(3) and 146(2). A toy block in;, the form of a hollow generally rectangular parallelepiped or cube is moulded of plastic, e.g. polythene or nylon, and may have letters of the alphabet or other markings embossed on four of the faces. At approximately the centre of one face a projection having an enlarged head is integrally moulded with the block, and the opposite face has a central aperture provided with a reinforcing rim therearound into which the headed projection of another block is adapted to fit with a snap action to join two blocks together. A method of moulding a block comprises extruding a length of plastic tubing, enclosing the length of tubing in a two-part mould cavity whilst the tubing is still in a plastic condition and introducing compressed fluid into the tubing to expand the tubing into conformity with the wall of the mould cavity. The end of the mould opposite to that through which the blowing fluid is admitted is shaped with an extension cavity to mould a head projection 2 and to pinch and close the end of the tubing. The other end of the mould is shaped to form an aperture 5 having a rim 6.
