Abstract
A refractory composition is obtained by adding an alkali metal silicate to a mixture of finely divided refractory and a phosphate and contacting with a gaseous rigidifying material. Up to 15% silicate and up to 5% phosphate can be present the silicate always being in greater proportion than the phosphate. specified are:-refractories-sand, alumina, zirconia, silica, firebrick, magnesia, titania, beryllia, mullite, sillimanite and their mixtures; phosphates-the alkali metal (including ammonium) and alkaline earth metal phosphates, phosphatic minerals and also organic phosphates e.g. tri-eresyl, tri-phenyl and tri-alkyl phosphates. An organic material which can be burned out may also be present. The gaseous material can be carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrous oxide, hydrogen chloride, stack or flue gases.
