Abstract
Di- and tri-haloacetic acids are partially dehalogenated by passing the vapours escaping from the liquid acids or from their solution in a suitable solvent (such as acetic acid), with the help of a carrier gas or reduced pressure, at a temperature below 150 DEG C. and together with hydrogen, over a hydrogenation catalyst. Suitable carrier gases are hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide; suitable catalysts are metals of Group VIII of the Periodic Table and their salts. At 100-140 DEG C. di- and/or trichloroacetate acid produces mainly monochloroacetic acid, and at 60-100 DEG C. mainly dichloroacetic acid. At 60-100 DEG C. di- and/or tri-bromoacetic acid produces mainly monobromoacetic acid. A suitable starting material is the recycled liquid obtained by the continuous chlorination of acetic acid. Some acetic acid is also obtained.
