A sterilizing box is provided with perforations 15 and 5 in the lid and bottom of the box,.-the perforations being guarded by removable and renewable panels 18 and 4 of filtering material, which permit the passage of high-pressure steam in sterilization but prevent subsequent passage of bacteria into the box and wherein the filtering material panels at the bottom of the box 4 are held in place by a perforated plate 6 releasably clamped to the bottom of the box on the inside of the box. The filter panel 4 may be clamped to the inside of the box by the perforated plate 16. The portion of the lid which extends across the body of the box is recessed and the rim of the lid is provided with a deep skirt 12, the apex of the rim of the lid has a heat-resisting rubber packing 23 attached to it, which makes an airtight seal between the lid and the body of the box when closed. The lid is hinged to allow compensating movements of the lid to accommodate for inequalities in the interface between the lid and the body of the box by two plates 26 and 27 screwed to the lid and the body of the box respectively. Each plate has end lugs 28 for supporting a long pintle 29. On the lid pintle are two hinge plates 31 and 32 and on the pintle associated with the body of the box, the hinge plates 33 and 34, each pair being spaced apart by a sleeve 30. The plates 31 and 32 interengage with the corresponding hinge plates 33 and 34 on the opposite pintle. The hinge plates 31, 32, 33 and 34 have lugs 35 for pivotal reception of pintles 36 which connect them together. Behind the hinge is a back stop 37 which limits the outward movement of the said hinge and supports the lid when the box is fully opened. The lid of the box is locked to the body by toggle fasteners which incorporate a sealing means consisting of a stud 46 secured to the plate 22. The said stud passes through a hole in the toggle lever 42 and at its outer end is a lateral hole through which passes a wire 47 with a label 48. The sealing means is broken when the box is opened. The box is provided with feet 11 which are on the same centres as the screws 19 so that when stacked the feet of one box cover the screws 19 of the next. The filter panels may consist of polyester fibre, nylon, glass fibre or natural textile materials. The box is made of brass, copper, stainless steel or a synthetic plastic, it may be rectangular or any other conventional shape and may incorporate additional perforated panels and-associated filtering materials in the sides of the box.
