Abstract
879,201. Wrapping and labelling machines. ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH) Ltd. Feb. 17, 1958 (Nov. 15, 1956], No. 34914/56. Class 73. [Also in Groups XVII and XXX] Describes a method of and apparatus for applying labels or wrappers around cylindrical articles so as to form an overlapping seam in which cellulosic wrappers are made to adhere to bottles still wet from washing without the use of gum. Bottles are fed intermittently in spaced succession to a station A where the leading edge of a wrapper, advanced in timed relationship, is applied tangentially and is simultaneously pressed on, the bottle being then rotated on its axis to wrap on the wrapper which is treated with water or adhesive to make it adhere. Bottles from a moving slatted conveyer 12 .are arrested by a stop 43 and successively rolled between the periphery of a rotating member 33, and a guide plate 19 on to a transfer member 23. The member 23 has plates shaped to engage and locate the base of the bottle (Figs. 10 and 11, not shown) which rotate on a hub 24 and, in conjunction with bobbins 47, support the bottle and lay it sideways on to a cradle 14 on an intermittently moving conveyer 16. The bobbins 47 are on a moving- chain 48 and a roller on a cam operated arm (Fig. 9, not shown) engages the neck of the bottle to lay it down on them. At A the base and neck of the bottle are gripped by friction discs, 61 and 62 rotated intermittently by a Geneva mechanism (not shown) to wrap on a cellulosic wrapper 86. The wrapper, severed from a web 87, is pressed on to the bottle by a roller 88 on an oscillating arm 89. Its leading edge adheres to the wet surface of the bottle and the other end to suction holes (Fig. 3, not shown) on a drum 81 that rotates simultaneously with the discs 61 and 62 and supports the wrapper around the tapered neck whilst it is being wound on. A rotatable pad 92 wetted by a roller 93 wets the leading edge of the wrapper to join it to the trailing edge. The suction is cut off, the drum 81 withdrawn and the conveyer 16 moves the bottle to station B where pleating fingers 97 pleat the wrapper over the bottle neck. Series of these fingers are each mounted on common shafts 98 to which they are keyed only frictionally so that the geometry of the bottle neck limits their pressure stroke, adjustable stops 113 being provided to position them on their return. Gripper jaws114 having rotary and axial movement grip and twist the end of the wrapper. The wrapped bottle is transferred to a delivery conveyer 18 by a mechanism similar to that which placed it in the cradle 14, but working in the opposite direction.
