878,133. Mass spectrometers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 14, 1960 [Jan. 19, 1959], No. 1943/59. Class 39(1). An electrostatic analyser for a mass spectrometer includes two deflecting electrodes 8, 9 supported by an insulating plate 7 and an earthed conducting shield 15 with a cylindrical extension 17 for preventing ions striking the surface of the insulating plate and building up wall charges there. The insulating plate consists of a block of optically flat heat resistant glass and the shield members of stainless steel. The surfaces of the electrodes 8, 9 facing the gap 11 may be cylindrical or toroidal.
