[Also in Group XXXVII] An automatic combined washing-machine and spin-drier includes a combined washing and centrifuging basket mounted to rotate within a stationary container, a scavenging pump serving to pump liquid out of the container, means for driving the basket and pump, and timing means for timing a complete washing and drying cycle including at least one emptying period and at least one spin-drying period, in which level responsive means operate when the level falls below a predetermined high level during any emptying period, and then automatically render the timing means ineffective. As shown, main supply 180 reaches bus-bars 181 and 182 by way of cam-controlled contacts 171 and 172, the pump 145 for emptying the machine being controlled by pump motor 146. Supply to secondary bus-bar 184 can be interrupted by contacts 183 which are opened when the door of the machine is opened and stop main motor 70. The agitating impeller 31 is controlled by solenoid 116 and contacts 173. The timer motor 170 can be connected to busbar 182 either by way of " closed when empty " level responsive switch 1.51 or by way of contacts 171 and " closed when full " contacts 186 of level responsive switch 152 and thus the timing of the cycle of operations is always interrupted when the machine is filling or emptying. Also, if the level of liquid in the machine rises during a spin-drying phase, contacts 151 open and de-energize motor 170 and spin-drying control solenoid 106 so that both the timer and the spin-drying stop until the machine is emptied. The hot and cold water supply are controlled by solenoids 138 and 139 which can only be energized when " closed when not full contacts 187 of level responsive switch 152 are in the closed position shown. A " hot-automatic-cold " switch is provided with contacts 191 to 196 arranged so that, in the " auto " position, only the hot water valve is opened during the initial filling period and during a subsequent filling period both valves are opened, in the " hot " position only the hot valve is opened and in the " cold " position only the cold valve is opened during any filling period.
