Abstract

Polyoxyalkylene compounds prepared by treating in presence of an alkaline catalyst a compound with at least one hydroxyl, carboxyl, mercapto, or amino group with one or more alkylene oxides are purified by contacting the reaction product before neutralization of the catalyst with an acid treated absorbent earth or clay and recovering the purified product therefrom. The clay is used in an amount that is 50%-100% in excess of that required to neutralize the alkali catalyst. The clay is preferably fuller's earth treated with H2SO4 or H3PO4. Ethylene, propylene and butylene oxides are specified and may be used in admixture or alternately to give polyoxyalkylene compounds in which the alkylene oxide units are randomly distributed or attached in blocks in the polymer chain. Crystalline or amorphous clays may be used, the crystalline variety being preferred. Clays specified are kaolinite, nacrite, halloysite, montmorrilonite, vermiculite, hectorite, nontronite, illite; micaceous clays, e.g. chlorites and the palygorskite group of clays, e.g. attapulgite. These clays are commonly known as fuller's earths, bentonites and zeolites. A number of suitable materials to which the alkylene oxides may be added are mentioned. Block copolymers prepared as in Specification 38019/57 may be treated. In Examples (1) ethylene and propylene oxides were added alternately to the monobutylether of ethylene glycol dissolved in potassium hydroxide. The polymer was free from excess alkylene oxide and treated with 4% by weight of a fuller's earth which has been treated with sulphuric acid, and the mixture then filtered. A product having an ash content of less than 0,001% was obtained. Examples (2)-(6) are similar. In Example (7) alternate additions of propylene and ethylene oxides were made to polyethylene glycol (average mol wt. 400) in presence of alkali. The product was treated with acid-treated fuller's earth and the clay then recured.
