Abstract
877,239. Electrodialysis. PERMUTIT CO. Ltd. Dec. 17, 1958 [Dec. 24, 1957], No. 40078/57. Class 41. A multi-compartment electrodialysis cell in which the compartments are separated by ionselective membranes has sheets of material having ion-exchange properties in some or all of the compartments, the sheets allowing passage of liquid through the compartments while increasing the electrical conductivity therein. The sheets may be confined to the desalting compartments in which electrolyte concentration is low, and each sheet may be of cation- or anion-exchange material or a mixture of both, or sheets of both kinds may be put in one compartment, e.g. in alternating sequence. The sheets, which may be flat, corrugated or embossed may be of gauze or woven fabric carrying ion-exchange groups or of ion-exchange granules cemented together. The gauze may be a resin polymer, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, coated with an ion-exchange resin. The sheets may be perforated, and the perforations in adjacent sheets may be staggered relative to one another. The perforated sheet or sheets may fill the entire space between the membranes.
