Abstract
876,084. Discharge lamps. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 9, 1957 [Aug. 9, 1956], No. 24359/56. Class 39(1). A flash discharge lamp comprises gas permeable means separating two spaces in the envelope for collecting particles sputtered from the cathode, thus preventing them circulating in the envelope and being deposited thereon. The lamp shown in Fig. 1 comprises an envelope having a tubular bent portion 1 and an enlarged portion 2 and having a cold cathode 3, a triggering electrode 6 and a filling of xenon at a pressure of 6-9 cms. Gas permeable means 7, formed of glass wool, fused quartz, wire wool or fine woven wire mesh, for collecting particles sputtered from the cathode 3, is disposed to the rear and/or sides of the cathode. In the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the tubular portion 1 comprises three U-shaped limbs and contacts a substantially cylindrical conducting member 10 connected to a conducting angled member 9 connected to a lead 8 sealed through the enlarged portion 2 of the envelope. The cathode 3 is supported between two metal wire gauzes 11 and 12. The gas-permeable particle-collecting means 13 is supported between the gauze 12 and a similar gauze 14 and is formed of a mesh of finely woven nickel, tungsten or molybdenum wire bent back on itself or crumpled up to form a filter. The mesh 13 can be replaced by wire wool, glass or fused quartz. In a further construction the gas - permeable particle - collecting means comprises a series of baffles.
