Abstract

875,885. Automatic speed-control systems. ILFORD Ltd. Dec. 31, 1959 [Jan. 12, 1959], No. 1102/59. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XVI] A web 1 passes from feed roll 2 to a roll 6 at which a coating is applied to the web which then passes to a drying zone 8 and to a take-up roll 12, a roll 10 being driven to draw the web through the system of rolls. The roll 6 drives magnetic tape 13 so that an electric signal is produced at head 16, the frequency of the signal being proportional to the speed of the roll 6. In another arrangement, a radial optical grating is secured to the roll 6 and a fixed optical grating is placed in line therewith, a beam of radiation passing through the gratings to a photo-cell which thus provides a signal having its frequency proportional to the speed of the roller 6, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown). The roll 6, 4 or 7 has a driving clutch of the magnetic particle type, powered by an electric motor and a braking clutch with an anchor. The output from the photo-cell is amplified, limited and frequency demodulated. The resultant frequency proportional voltage is compared with a direct reference voltage and the error voltage is applied to an amplifier which energizes the two clutches in a push-pull manner. The speed of the web is thus maintained at a substantially constant value determined by the reference voltage, Fig. 5 (not shown). Alternatively, the output of the frequency demodulator may be coupled through a capacitor to the input of a push-pull amplifier controlling the clutches. This system does not control the mean speed of the web but minimizes short-term speed variations, Fig. 6 (not shown). In a further modification, the output of the photo-cell is amplified and compared with the output of a reference oscillator. An output voltage is thus obtained proportional to the phase difference between these two signals and this output voltage is applied to a push-pull D.C. amplifier controlling the clutches, Fig. 7 (not shown).
