Abstract

<PICT:0875399/III/1> A mono-crystalline rod of silicon is pulled from a melt heated by an electron beam. As shown, an electron beam furnace comprises a hearth 2, an axially movable seed holder 3, and one or more electron guns 6 (see Group XL(a)). After formation of the melt each electron beam is moved radially outwards a small distance to leave a central unheated region of melt into which the seed crystal can be dipped. The seed crystal holder 3 and the hearth 2 are water-cooled. Specification 872,579 is referred to.
