Abstract

Cellulose textile materials are impregnated with an aqueous solution of a compound having an atom or group capable of reacting with the hydroxyl groups of the cellulose to form a chemical bond, the moist materials then being placed in contact with a pair of electrodes and subjected to the influence of an electric current in the presence of an electrolyte, an acid-binding agent thereby being generated from the electrolyte and facilitating reaction of the compound with the cellulose. Specified compounds are dyestuffs of the nitro, azo, anthraquinone or phthalocyanine series, such as those described in Specifications 209,723, 298,494, 460,224, 733,471, 740,533, 772,030, 774,925, 775,308, 780,591, 781,930, 785,120, 785,222, 802,198 and 805,562, dyestuff intermediates such as azoic components, mordants for basic dyestuffs, optical bleaching agents and agents for facilitating the bonding of starches to cellulose textiles for stiffening purposes. Specified electrolytes are the lithium, sodium, potassium, alkylated ammonium, magnesium, calcium, strontium or barium salts of various organic and inorganic acids. Direct or alternating current is applied from a pair of rollers, plates or belts as electrodes at a potential difference of, for example, 2-50 volts. The aqueous solution may be applied by padding or printing and pattern effects may also be obtained by applying the electric current locally to the material, for example, by using engraved or embossed rollers as the electrodes.
