Abstract

875,232. Electron beam apparatus. WILDBARFIELD ELECTRIC FURNACES Ltd. Feb. 10, 1959 [April 24, 1958], No. 4696/59 Class 39(1). [Also in Group XXII] 4696/59. An electron-beam furnace for melting gascontaining metal particles to produce gas-free metals comprises a preferably concave tantalum or tungsten cathode 24 with a heater 28 mounted in a cathode chamber 26 and emitting electrons which are formed by a focusing electrode 30 and an accelerating anode 32 into a beam 34 which is focused by coils 50 to pass through apertures in partitions 40, 42, 44 into a furnace chamber 10 containing a cold mould 12 having a stool 20 which is retractable by means of a screw 22, the mould and stool being cooled by water passing through passages 56. The electron beam maintains a pool 14 of molten metal in the cold mould 12. A conveyer 19 feeds metal powder or sponge from a supply 18 to the pool 14. A high capacity blower or diffusion pump 16 maintains the furnace chamber 10 at a pressure of from 1 to 10 microns of mercury, which is a sufficiently high vacuum to permit complete removal of dissolved gases from metals such as titanium, zirconium, tantalum and niobium. It will also permit dissociation or volatilization of many oxides and nitrides particularly of the Group V and Group VI metals. The cathode.chamber 26 is-maintained at a pressure of-about 0.01 micron of mercury by a pump 36. Pumps 46 and 48 maintain the spaces between the partitions 40, 42, and 44 at pressures of about 0.1 and 1 micron of mercury respectively. A valve may be provided in the tube 38 to maintain a high vacuum at all times in the vicinity of the cathode 24.
