Abstract

875,197. Clutch control. WAY-HOPE, J. G. A. Jan. 28, 1960 [March 5, 1959], No. 7751/59. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXIII] Clutch mechanism for the transmission gearing of an outboard motor for boats comprises an element 19 of a dog clutch fast with a crown wheel 18 geared to a driving shaft 11, and a second dog clutch element 20 fast on a propeller shaft 13 rotatably mounted in bearings 14, 15 of a housing 16 and slidable axially therein. A clutch-actuating rod 26 is disposed outside the housing and has a forked end 25 embracing a boss 29 of the housing and carrying a roller 32 engaging a cam track 24 formed on the housing. The rear of the forked end 25 engages a boss 30 on the shaft 13 whereby the shaft is shifted axially to disengage the clutch when the rod 26 is raised. The clutch is engaged by a spring 21 on lowering the rod 26. The cam track 24 is in the form of an inclined rib on the housing and the bottom ends 34 of the prongs of the fork 25 are curved inwardly to repose on either side of the rib to shield the cam track from deposition of weeds or other foreign matter and to remove such matter upon movement of the fork.
