Apparatus for forming and batching envelopes or the like includes means for placing the bundles in boxes. It may also close the boxes with a lid. The bundles are conveyed to the box filling station in a direction at right angles to that of the flow of envelopes during manufacture and the filled boxes are discharged in a direction parallel to said flow direction. In one embodiment, bundles 3 collect against a stop 5 and are engaged by a portion 8 of a conveyer for transfer to a platform 14 above the filling position II. Boxes 25 are advanced by a conveyer 30 to rest on a platform, Fig. 7 (not shown), which moves, to permit a vertically reciprocating pusher to place each box between gripping dogs on a further conveyer 36. This latter conveyer brings it to rest at the filling station. Elements 12, 12a engage the group of bundles, compress it longitudinally and, after the platform 14 has retracted, move downwards to enter the box. As they rise, a stripper 15 causes the bundles to remain in the box. The filled box moves to the closing station III where a lid 46 is fed from the base of a magazine 45 by a pusher 47 and is engaged by the suction pad of a vertically moveable pusher 49. The pusher lowers it on to the box, the sides of which are forced inwards by elements 50, 51 to assist telescoping. In a second embodiment, Figs. 1-4 (not shown), boxes are fed directly to the filling station by conveyer. Both embodiments are adjustable for various sizes of envelopes, &c.
