Abstract
Boron nitride is produced by heating a mixture of melamine and boric acid, or anhydride, in the ratio 0.5-3 mols. boric acid per mol. melamine, to at least 600 DEG C. in the absence of oxygen. The reactants may be mixed, either as dry powders, or by the addition of melamine to a hot aqueous solution of boric acid and evaporating the resulting solution to dryness, or cooling to precipitate a solid mixture. This solid mixture may be heated in an atmosphere of N2, or in a covered crucible packed in granulated coke and/or sand. Specification 874,166 is referred to.
