Abstract

874,092. Lubricating bearings. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 13, 1959 [March 13, 1958], No. 8128/58. Classes 12 (1) and 12 (3). A combined journal and thrust bearing for a shaft 6 comprises a sleeve 3, having a cylindrical bearing surface 5, and an apertured thrust bearing member 12 which is spaced axially from the sleeve 3 by felt pads 16a extending radially through slots in the adjacent end of the sleeve 3. A relatively large annular felt member 17 forms an oil reservoir which is in contact with felt members 16 having portions 16b passing through slots 14 in the member 12 to convey oil to the thrust bearing surface and having the portions 16a which convey oil to grooves 20, Fig. 3, in the bearing surface 5. Oil flinger washers 9, 10 are secured to the shaft, and the washer 9 abuts the thrust bearing member 12, thereby additionally serving as a thrust washer. The sleeve 3 is mounted in an end shield 2 of a small electric motor by means of a cylindrical housing 4 which is closed at its ends in an oil-tight manner by means of a pair of dished annular plates 7, 8.
