Abstract
Photo-conductive cadmium sulphide powder is prepared by condensation from a vapour containing hydrogen chloride and then reheating the cadmium sulphide in a sulphur vapour. In one embodiment, cadmium is heated in a part of a silica tube to between 560 and 600 DEG C. the cadmium vapour flowing to a portion of the tube at 900 DEG C. where it mixes with hydrogen sulphide which has been passed through hydrochloric acid. Cadmium sulphide condenses further down the tube in the form of a powder which is ground to a particle size of 20-40m and then heated in a closed tube containing sulphur vapour at a pressure of about 3 atmospheres. In a modification, the powder is washed in an aqueous solution of copper sulphate before firing in the sulphur vapour. The material may be combined with an electroluminescent layer to form a light amplifier, or used to provide an X-ray intensifier.
